Besides it is hardly soluble in cold benzene and insoluble in water. Anthraquinone is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, and it is difficult to be oxidized. The reaction of Anthraquinone include: nitration, sulphonation and bromination .

Anthraquinone is mainly used as an important raw material for the production of Dye Intermediate and Dyes.
Anthraquinone also can be used as distillation agent of paper pulp in papermaking industry and as desulfurizing agent in chemical fertilizer industry. but the amount of digesting additive used as pulp has been increasing rapidly.
